Weaning from Breastfeeding? How to Handle the Emotions & Hormones
Apr 08, 2025Mama, if you're here — I see you. đź’›
You’ve poured your heart (and let’s be honest, your sleep) into nourishing your little one. Breastfeeding has been more than just feeding — it’s been comfort, connection, and an anchor through the stormy seas of motherhood. But now, you’re thinking about weaning from breastfeeding, and your heart feels all the things.
Maybe you’re ready, but your baby isn’t.
Maybe your baby is ready, but you’re holding on.
Or maybe, like many moms, you’re caught between relief and sadness, and wondering if it’s normal to feel so conflicted. (Spoiler: it absolutely is.)
Let’s walk through this together. đź’›
First, Mama — You Are Not Alone
I’ve been exactly where you are. Twice.
With my first son, I had my goal set: make it to his second birthday. But at 22 months, he was done. I felt like I had failed — like I came this close but fell short. Yet, he was ready, and his happiness mattered most.
With my second, it was the opposite. I was eight months pregnant with our third, still nursing him, and feeling so done. But he wasn’t. And mama, the guilt? It was heavy. He didn’t want to let go, and I felt like I was taking away something precious.
Whether you’re feeling relief, sadness, guilt, or even joy — know this: your feelings are valid. đź’›
The Emotional Rollercoaster of Weaning from Breastfeeding
Weaning is more than just a physical change. It’s emotional. Hormonal. And deeply personal.
Here’s what you might be feeling:
-
Relief: Ready to have your body back? To travel without a pump? Yes, mama!
-
Sadness: Missing that unique bond only you shared with your baby.
-
Guilt: Wondering, “Am I weaning too soon?”
-
Uncertainty: Will this change my relationship with my baby?
And you might even feel all of these at once. That’s okay.
The Hormone Factor: What No One Tells You
Let’s talk hormones, because they are sneaky little mood shifters.
As you wean, hormones like prolactin and oxytocin decrease, which can lead to mood swings or mild postpartum depression.
If you’ve felt a wave of unexpected sadness or irritability, you’re not imagining it. It's your body's natural response to this shift. 🌊
đź’ˇ Pro tip: Be gentle with yourself. Focus on nourishing foods and activities that replenish you — like walking outside, journaling, or even a monthly massage (yes, please!).
Practical Tips to Ease the Transition
Here’s what helped me and so many moms in our community:
1. Replace, Don’t Remove
When my son wanted to nurse, I cuddled him while feeding his sister and read a book together. Find new rituals for connection.
2. Prioritize Nutrition
Balance your blood sugar, eat healthy fats, proteins, fiber, and stay hydrated. Omega-3s, magnesium, iron, and B vitamins are your best friends during weaning!
3. Focus on Self-Care
Walks in fresh air. Early bedtimes. Quiet moments of meditation. Ask yourself daily: What will fill my cup today?
4. Seek Support
Talk to other moms. Join a community (like our Postpartum Shift!). You’re never alone in this journey.
5. Honor Your Timing
Forget what others say — there is no “right” timeline for weaning. Whether you breastfeed for 2 weeks or 2 years, it’s about what feels right for you and your baby.
Mama, Remember This
Weaning is not the end of your bond — it’s simply the beginning of a new chapter. đź“–
It’s okay if you feel emotional.
It’s okay if you feel relief.
It’s okay to feel both at the same time.
Love isn’t measured in ounces. 🍼 It’s measured in the way you show up, the cuddles, the snuggles, and the unconditional care you give your baby every single day.
