Ditch the Diet Chaos: How to Truly Enjoy Vacations and Your Post-Baby Body

Jun 19, 2024

Are you tired of the endless cycle of dieting before vacations, only to feel out of control and guilty while indulging on your trip? It's time to ditch the diet chaos and learn how to truly enjoy vacations while loving your post-baby body.

The Dieting Trap

Before vacations, many moms fall into the trap of extreme dieting or restricting certain foods before a vacation, all in pursuit of the elusive "beach body." However, this approach often backfires and leads to feeling out of control around food while on vacation.

Restricting intake by cutting out entire food groups like carbs for weeks or months before a beach vacation may seem like a smart approach. But when you finally reach your destination and give yourself full permission to indulge your body revolts. Suddenly drinking sugary cocktails and eating salty snacks all day leaves you feeling bloated, lethargic, and uncomfortable because your system is in shock from the dramatic switch.

This extreme restriction before a trip sets you up for bingeing, guilt, and physical discomfort while on vacation. It's a vicious cycle that robs you of the joy and relaxation you deserve.

Embracing Body Neutrality for Vacations

Rather than waging war on your body before every vacation, it's time to embrace a balanced, body-neutral approach. This mindset involves giving yourself permission to enjoy all foods without shame or guilt, both before and during your travels AND also knowing how your body responds to different foods and honoring that.

You can live a balanced life before the vacation, eating a variety of foods that make you feel energized and satiated. If you want to reach your postpartum health goals while feeling in control around all foods, join us inside of The Postpartum Shift program where you'll learn how to fuel your body to feel your best postpartum, mentally and physically.

Then, when you go on vacation, you can indulge in special treats and local cuisines without your body reacting negatively. With no extreme restrictions preceding the trip, your system remains regulated and accustomed to different foods.

This mindset shift involves letting go of the idea that you need to look a certain way or achieve a "beach body" to enjoy or deserve a vacation. It's about booking the trip, finding comfortable clothing that fits your current body, nourishing your body with delicious food, and being present to make memories with your loved ones.

Your life is happening right now, regardless of your size or shape. At the end of the day, your family and friends won't remember what size pants you wore or how you looked in a bikini – they'll cherish the joyful moments and experiences you shared together.

Actionable Tips for Balanced Vacationing

To start embracing this balanced, shame-free approach to vacations, try implementing these tips:

  1. Book the vacation, even if it's just a local camping trip or weekend getaway. Getting out of your daily environment is rejuvenating for the mind and soul. Don't wait for the "perfect" body to start making travel memories.
  2. Find clothing that fits and makes you feel comfortable for your trip, whether it's investing in new pieces or borrowing from friends. Ditch the pursuit of squeezing into old, ill-fitting outfits that will distract you.
  3. Start letting go of guilt and shame around foods by allowing all foods to fit into your lifestyle without restriction. Pay attention to what foods make your body feel best & honor that.
  4. Nourish your body well before and during the vacation, while also including room for enjoyment. Avoid starting a new diet or "meal plan" before your trip, which encourages bingeing and cravings.
  5. When you return from vacation, resist the urge to "make up for" your indulgences with extreme dieting. This restrictive mindset perpetuates the unhealthy cycle. Simply ease back into your usual balanced routine.
  6. Focus on capturing joyful memories with your loved ones, not nitpicking and critiquing your body's appearance.

By following these tips and shifting your mindset, you can break free from the diet roller coaster and truly enjoy your vacations. You deserve to feel comfortable, confident, and present – making beautiful memories without obsessing over your body or food intake.

You still deserve to get in the pictures, wear the swimsuit, eat the delicious local food, and soak up every moment of your hard-earned vacation. So ditch the diet chaos, embrace body neutrality, and start embracing the vacations and life you deserve – free from food guilt and body shame.

Hey there, I'm Brooke...

After my son was born prematurely with Down syndrome and needed open-heart surgery, I felt completely overwhelmed. Juggling doctor’s appointments, therapy, pumping full time, and adjusting to motherhood left me drained. I felt guilty for wanting a break and neglected my own needs, making it feel impossible to care for myself and him.

That breakdown became my breakthrough. I realized that taking care of myself wasn’t selfish—it was essential for my family. By healing my hormones and metabolism through nutrition, I gained energy, stabilized my mood, and reached my healthiest weight while producing more than enough milk (even donating hundreds of oz to babies in need).

I felt confident in my body again—wearing swimsuits, enjoying vacations, and not worrying about my milk supply. Seeing so many moms struggle with the same issues, I created The Postpartum Shift. With over 10+ years as a Registered Dietitian & Certified Lactation Counselor, I’ve helped thousands of moms get results and feel like themselves again.
